Megan Phillips, SLP
Hi! I’m Megan and I love what I do. Soy Megan y me encanto lo que hago.
I became a Speech-Language Pathologist after my grandfather experienced a stroke, no one could get him talking. That was, until the SLP came in and began singing our Polish “happy birthday” song and right at the end he piped in with his “hip-hip-hooray” as if nothing had changed. That feeling of fear and unknowing slipped and hope entered the room again. That has been my favorite feeling ever since and the one I strive to help all my families experience.
Since finishing school in 2014, I’ve explored a variety of treatment areas until I found what I now believe to be my “niches”. I decided to focus on stuttering, because of the disfluencies I saw as my grandfather began to speak again and his self confidence wavered. I want to help others gain or regain their confidence in speaking.
I decided to learn with and work with Spanish speaking families, because I love the idea of bilingualism and saw how so many families were not getting the care they needed. They would shrink away because they were afraid no one would understand them and therefore no one would help. I want to help these families realize their strengths, continue growing in their culture, and see their child advance in every way possible. Continuo a aprender más y estoy agradecida de trabajar con las familias que me ayudan a mejorar mis habilidades.
I decided to learn more about and provide the right sensory assessment and strategies because I learned that this is the baseline for everything in life. If we are uncomfortable in our bodies, we are ill equipped to learn and advance. As a person with ADHD, I know personally how much this can impact day-to-day lives and strive to help children and their families find and make the changes they can make to not only advance in communication, but in daily life skills.
When I’m not working with these amazing families or spending time with my own, I’m coaching circus arts aerial classes! I am working diligently to combine these “two worlds” of mine, now becoming certified in “Circus Arts Therapy”. Utilizing aerial and circus skills to help grow communication and address sensory and emotional concerns in speech therapy.
I’m not here to only work on “speech”. I’m here to work WITH the WHOLE child and their family.
